Topic: Combining the Physical With the Esoteric
Hi Sonja, my question: Is there a way to combine traditional medicine with energy work that will be acceptable? By the way, I just love your new book! Very different from the other two! Bobby Jo, H. Norfolk, Va.
Hi Bobby Jo, Thank you, and yes! There are ways to combine the two. Many already do although these practices may not not be main stream yet. This is a practice that combines both. Easy to learn, and is already practiced by many in both traditional and non traditional venues.

From the beginning of the human race, we have been searching for ways to alleviate pain, emotional, physical and spiritual.
In ancient times the medicine people of the village would make use of numbing herbs and plants such as the needles and resin of the Fir Tree made into an oil to rub on painful joints, oil made from Basil and Thyme was used for tooth aches, Hemp, at times, was used externally, for varicose ulcers.
Healers also engaged their patients mind to tap into the subconscious and the belief systems of the village/tribe by chanting, smudging, prayers, drumming and other methods, like herbs and tinctures, in order to diminish the pain of injury or illness and to bring a feeling general well being due to energy levels being raised. .This was a combination of mental, emotional, belief and physical, as well as herbal medicine. They worked with the whole ball of wax! They learned that all the parts worked together, and understood how to combine them for the greatest results, which included group support of the whole village. They knew that all the parts worked together to effect the whole.
Today, living without pain or illness is big business. We just need to turn on our TV to get the latest description of what’s good for what ails us! If we don’t die of the side effects, we will be just fine!
As a society we have always known that there were drug free ways to manage pain and at times eliminate it. Most of this information comes from The Eastern Medical tradition and aboriginal cultures that go back many centuries.
Times are changing. Many traditional health care practitioners are combining their Western Medicine practice with Eastern and aboriginal philosophies and belief systems with excellent results. Integrated Medicine is not a quick fix, but a self-awareness learning process. It’s a journey of getting back in touch with the self most of us lost as we came out of child hood. The part of us that knew how we felt, when we were tired, when we were hungry, when we didn’t ‘feel just right’ near Uncle Joe or Aunt Sally, we knew we were not safe, even if no one listened. We “got it”. We trusted how we felt. As we grew up we were told that our feelings were wrong or not nice. Soon we had no idea who we were or what was good for us, or what we needed to do to stay well, and the society we lived in supported our “non – self’”.
Today there are many combinations of ancient practices available to us. We can just do a bit of research to find what fits into our life style and belief system. This is not to say that pain medication is wrong. I believe at times there needs to be a combination of methods. For some people expensive medication is not an option. A combination of therapies may work better.
We all know the value and pain management benefits of massage therapy, meditation, acupuncture and acupressure. Hypnosis has been used for child birth and even surgery in this country for at least 20 years or more. Insurance companies often pay for massage therapy, and acupuncture for pain management with a doctors prescription in many states.
In the past 10 years another method of pain control has come to light. Part acupressure, part affirmations, Eastern in philosophy. The benefits shown for pain relief are tremendous. This process is called Emotional Freedom Technique or just Tapping.
Tapping isn’t new. The theory is based on the Eastern medical idea that within your body lines of energy run through what are called meridians. Meridians can’t be seen; they are part of the connection of matter and spirit that work together forming the whole. Scientists call this connection an “affinity”, part matter and part spirit or energy that can only be separated at death.
To understand how EFT works let me give you a brief tour of our energy system. Chakras are the power centers that feed the energy through the meridians, the energy part of our physical bodies. We have 7 major Chakras that correspond physically to our endocrine, or ductless gland, system. We also have minor Chakras in our hands and feet. Tapping works the same way acupuncture or acupressure works; painlessly tapping into our energy system and removing barriers or blockages caused by emotional trauma. This results in emotional freedom or clarity, assisting our physical body to heal as the emotional/ spiritual trauma is healed.
The word Chakra means vortex or spinning wheel in the Sanskrit language. Chakras can be found in both front and back of your body along your spine, on top of your head and on your forehead. Their size is about the size of a small coin. Chakras have been described as energy portals, places where energy can enter your body. They respond to vibrations as well as thoughts.
One way of understanding the function of the Chakra system is to see it as the link between the physical nervous system in your body and the universal energy that is present everywhere. Chakras form the connecting link that allows this non-material universal energy to enter your material physical body. Upon entering your body, this energy will then be carried away by your meridians to your nervous system and the places where you most need it.
Although there is very little mention of Chakras in conventional medicine, they form an integral part of your body’s energy and nervous system. The reason so little is mentioned about them in conventional medicine is that they are not visible to the naked eye, not even through a microscope. Chakras exist in the realm lying between the physical and non-physical. That’s precisely where their function lies – in transforming non-material universal energy into physical energy in your body that can be used to help your body’s natural growth and healing process. Our intent and our beliefs are the driving force behind this movement of energy.
Tapping is easily learned and gives us a simple entry to our system of energy and matter. Contact me about classes if you wish.
Keep well, and focus on each piece of joy in your life each day!
